Milan and Lake Como

We took the plane on Saturday morning in june, very early, our Schedule a whole day in Milan and a day on Lake Como to discover Varenna and Bellagio.

It is a bit short, but it will allow us to see this region of the lakes that i heard about many years ago, but i never had the opportunity to visit. There are many others that also interest me like Lake Garda, Lake Iseo, which are well known in the region, but the distance between each lake does not allow me to see them all in such short time. I will have to come back, but let’s start with that first.

Our Journey is by plane, but a detail that has its imortance, Milan has two airports Malpensa and Linate. The first is 45km from the center while Linate is only 10km away, so if you have a choice and want to save time, you know what you have to do.

For me when i think of Milan, the capital of Lombardy, i associate it with the capital of fashion and design, modern italian architecture, the Duomo, La Scala, the Museum del Novecento… a vibrant, dynamic city, that i have seen several times, but very quickly, during the years when i came to work for a famous Milanese brand. I couldn’t really take the time, now i want to settle us in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II during our stay. I have always love this place, not just  because it is occupied by beautiful luxury houses, antique shops, and many cafes, but especially, by the beauty of the place, a stunning glass roof that covers the gallery, which leads to the Place of Duomo by its arch. It is a 19th century building, in a neo classical style designed by the architect Giuseppe Mengoni. We find ourselves in the neighbourhood surrouded by prestigious buildings.

Our hotel TownHouse, besides its location, is modern, pleasant and its staff has been taking care with us, if you want their address you will find them at the end of this article. Leaving the hotel and being able to be directly in the galleria, really a great pleasure and we can start our visit with the Duomo.

First lunch at the Giacomo Arengario, for a seafood  and pasta speciality, it’s all good, from the main course to dessert, it’s not really cheap, but we go there because we can have lunch in front of the Duomo and we will come back to it because it was good.

A visit to the Duomo, the third largest Church in the world, works which began in 1386, unfinished changes, successive architects, through the ages, to bring to light one of the most ambitious and long project that the city will have known, end of the works early 20th century. Giving birth to what remains a work in perpetual reconstruction. A marvelous by the number of pinnacles, arrows, statues, giants, gargoyles… the interior contains the Chapel of the Madonna of the Tree which is absolutely beautiful. By taking your tickets in advance, you will avoid long minutes of waiting. Nearby you have the Novecento Museum (Palazzo dell’Arengario via Marconi 1, 20123 Milan) inaugurated in 2010, présents the avant-garde currents of the 20th century italian and milanese créations : Giuseppe Pellizza, Lucio Fontana, Giacomo Balla…

At the first hour of the day, i get up to wander though a quiet city, leaving the gallery i find La Scala, the theater where the greatest voices of opera took place. I stroll, my plan in my hands, up to the street via Omenoni 3, i fall totally by chance on this facade of stone giants who represent barbarians subjected by the Romans, made by the sculptor of the sixteenth Leone Leoni.

Departure for lake Como, from the central station of Milan, you have about an hour, until Varenna-Esino. A short stroll to Varenna, where you can discover the Villa Monastero, which we could not visit due to lack of time. We take the boat to Bellagio which is just opposite the shore, the crossing is not long, the village is 3km away. A lunch break in La Punta, outside the crowd of the center, we find surrouded by vegetation, facing the lake, eating food from the lake. Visit of the villa Melzi, particularly of its botanical gardens, the situations is perfect for a moment of relaxation and to admire the lake, before leaving.
